PVH Corp., Eye Wish Opticiens, TinQwise and more

First, let's introduce our guests

Dawes Dias Hanny Van De Weerdt

Dawes has been working in retail for the past 22 years. He started as a seasonal part-time sales associate at the GAP in NYC and worked his way up due to his passion for retail and the great leaders he met in his journey.

In his current role as Senior Learning & Development Specialist at PVH Corp., Dawes leads the training initiatives for the Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein stores across Europe.

Hanny is responsible for supporting and encouraging all her colleagues in their development as manager People Experience at Eye Wish Opticiens in the Netherlands and GrandOptical Belgium. Right now, her focus is on creating a new digital learning platform, developing the onboarding journeys and welcome days and supporting the transition the company is currently making.

Together with 12 other experienced learning and development professionals in the industry we answered questions such as: “How do you facilitate growth in your organization?” and “What would you need in order to create clear growth paths?”

In this article, we will take you through the discoveries we made together.

Unlocking everybody's potential

After talking with our guests, one thing was clear: career development is the key to unlocking employee potential. By providing opportunities for growth, we empower our team members to develop new skills, boost their job satisfaction, and ultimately become more productive and efficient.

Let’s talk about

The discoveries we made together

Involve managers and team leads

Dawes' story taught us that managers and team leads play a critical role in career growth. It's important to involve them in creating and stimulating growth opportunities for their team. With the right training, they can provide the support and guidance needed to help employees reach their full potential.

Dawes: “In my eyes career development means passion, clear objectives and winning.”

Involve employees in the creation of growth paths

“I think life should be fun”, Hanny says. “For me, it matters how much fun I have in my work.”

Involving employees in the creation of growth paths ensures that their strengths, weaknesses, aspirations, and learning styles are taken into account. This personalization can lead to greater motivation and better results.

Keep it simple and start small

One common question that came up was, "Where do we start?" In this case it doesn’t matter if you’re dealing with a big organization with multiple departments or a low budget. Our Learning Specialist Job van Dijk recommended to start small and to focus on one or two crucial roles. This approach can help prevent overwhelming employees and employers alike.

Don't let a lack of time and resources prevent you from providing career development opportunities.

Break growth paths down

In hierarchical structures, providing career development opportunities can be a challenge. “Especially when you have to align departments in different countries. Different cultures have different approaches and opportunities in career development”, Dawes mentions.

However, it's not always necessary to provide new job openings to help someone grow in their career. Breaking growth paths down into small steps can help employees feel a sense of achievement and progress towards their career goals. Even a task or a project can be a valuable step in a growth path. “You have to add meaning to the job, because you don’t wake up wanting to be an optician”, Hanny says.

Clear and transparent communication

Finally, we learned that clear and transparent communication is essential to ensure that employees know about growth opportunities. This transparency can help build trust and motivate employees to pursue their career goals.

Hanny: “The career opportunities should be so clear that people are able to find their own path.”

In conclusion

These are the insights that will help you overcome bottlenecks in career development for your employees. Remember, creating effective growth paths requires time and effort, but the benefits are well worth it, also for you.
