Empower your employees to produce training materials

The solution to content scarcity

Shared content creation is an innovative trend gaining popularity as a response to content scarcity. It empowers your employees to independently or collaboratively produce training materials on topics they excel in.

Below, I'll give you six reasons why you should start leveraging this approach and inspire your colleagues to join in. Because let's face it. As an L&D manager, chances are you are running into the same challenges as most of our clients regarding developing and training your employees. How do you swiftly engage new hires? Provide room for self-development? And most importantly, how do you empower your employees to become self-reliant, mini CEOs driving your organisation forward?

So, it's not just because you want to be an early adopter. These six reasons genuinely help you achieve your L&D plans.

You want to:

To be creative
1 | Reduce workload and content stress

By distributing content creation among individuals within your organisation, you reduce the workload per person and accelerate content production. An added benefit is that this collaboration encourages more thought on various subjects, stimulating innovative ideas.

2 | Foster knowledge sharing

We witnessed how informal information flows were disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent lockdowns. Remember the 70:20:10 model? When all the coffee machine chats disappeared, that informal knowledge sharing (the 20 in the model) also diminished. To address this, gather a group of colleagues and let them develop training materials together. This way, you capture that knowledge once and for all; chances are, this training will feel just as engaging as those coffee machine conversations.

3 | Embrace collaborative learning
I learn from you; you learn from me. The student becomes the teacher, and vice versa. If you want to foster a learning culture in your organisation, allow your employees to create content together.

4 | Keep your knowledge up to date

Whether it's new laws and regulations or a new system, fortunately, you always have colleagues who have delved into the subject matter. Give them a chance to share their knowledge with the group through training materials. Lunch presentations are informative, but they become even more effective when used as training. Compile all that knowledge into bite-sized online lessons, and you'll build an incredibly up-to-date knowledge bank.

Creating together
5 | Engagement is no longer a challenge
Shared content creation is enjoyable because it motivates employees to share their accomplishments. Are they skilled presenters? Let them create training on it! Or organize a challenge around it. For example, the store with the highest conversion rate can share its approach in mandatory employee training. How exciting for that store to share their winning ideas with the entire team!

6 | Well-defined growth paths

Outline your employees' three best skills in a training format

Filling growth paths is perhaps the biggest challenge. What skills do you already have in-house, and for which ones do you need to create training materials? Assess the skills of your current employees and ask them to outline their three best skills in a training format. Collect and document their responses; you'll have some content for each skill. This approach will greatly accelerate skill development and growth paths.
